You have a career pathway diagram hanging on your office wall. Maybe it is a clean flow chart showing high school to associate degree to bachelor's to industry. Maybe it is a color-coded infographic with arrows pointing upward. It looks professional. It communicates a clear trajectory. And every time a journeyer looks at it and says "that is not how it happened for me," you feel the distance between the map and the territory. This issue is for faculty designing career-connected curricula, program coordinators mapping workforce outcomes, academic advisors helping journeyers see their futures, and anyone who has watched a real career path contradict the diagram they drew to explain it.
The Partnership Moment

Names and scenarios in this guide are composites, drawn from presentations, case studies, professional experience, and evaluation research across multiple programs and regions. Any identified programs or individuals that are featured have opted in to share their experience and program information in support of the community. It is a well-designed visual: a left-to-right flow from "High School Completion" through "Certificate Program" through "Associate Degree" through "Entry-Level Position" through "Advancement." Arrows connect each stage. Color coding shows different specialization tracks. It is the kind of diagram that reassures funders, impresses accreditors, and helps prospective journeyers see a path forward.
Then she opens the floor for introductions.
Kenji, a career-changer, stands up. He is twenty-six. He spent four years in hospitality management after high school. He discovered machining through a friend who had transitioned from restaurant work to a manufacturing shop and kept talking about how the precision and problem-solving reminded him of managing a kitchen line. Kenji enrolled in an introductory machining course on a whim, discovered he had an aptitude for spatial reasoning he had never used in his previous career, and is now in his second semester of CNC training. His path from hospitality to machining involved a friend's recommendation, one exploratory course, a conversation with a lab director who recognized his spatial thinking, and a part-time apprenticeship that confirmed his decision.
None of that fits on the poster.
Alejandra introduces herself next. She came to the biotech program from a different starting point -- a family health experience that connected her to diagnostic science through an instructor's passing comment. Her pathway involved academic mentors, an industry visitor who answered questions after a guest lecture, and three semesters of progressive skill building.
Marcus, the CNC journeyer from the previous semester, comes in to welcome the new cohort. He tells them he enrolled because his uncle said the money was good. His pathway from pragmatic entrance to genuine expertise involved discovering an unexpected aptitude, a troubleshooting experience that changed how he thought about the work, and an internship supervisor who saw things in him that his grades did not reflect.
Three journeyers. Three completely different pathways to the same program. Dr. M looks at the poster on the wall -- the clean, sequential diagram -- and realizes it describes none of them.
Under the Surface
The standard career pathway model assumes linearity. High school leads to post-secondary, which leads to credentials, which lead to employment. Stage one enables stage two enables stage three. The arrows go in one direction.
This model serves institutional planning. It helps programs sequence curricula, articulation agreements connect institutions, and funders track progress through a pipeline. It is useful for system design. It is misleading for individuals.
Real career pathways are shaped by moments of opportunity, moments of need, and moments of change that nobody can predict. Kenji's friend mentioned machining. Alejandra's grandmother needed treatment. Marcus's uncle talked about wages. These entry points have nothing to do with sequential pipeline design, and everything to do with how careers actually begin.
The cost of the linear model is not just inaccuracy. It is exclusion. When a journeyer looks at a pipeline diagram and does not see their experience reflected in it, the message is that their path is abnormal. When every success story presented during orientation follows the sequential model, the journeyers whose paths meandered feel like exceptions rather than the norm they actually are.
The evaluation cost is significant too. When your pathway tracking only measures forward movement through sequential stages, you cannot capture the lateral discoveries, the unexpected connections, and the informal mentorships that actually explain why someone succeeds. You end up reporting pipeline throughput when you should be reporting journey patterns.
